Obituary: Mowzey Radio’s ‘sweet voice’ goes silent

Mowzey Radio, the singer with a million dollar musical voice, is dead. Radio, who has been battling for his life at Case Clinic on Bombo Road in Kampala since being beaten in a bar fight on the morning of January 21, was pulled out of induced coma at 3am on the first day of February.

Like many Ugandans, music fans have been waiting for January to end and usher in February. But it will now be just another painful wish.

A graduate of Industrial Psychology from Makerere University, the 33-year-old Moses Sekibogo from Busoga led his musical Siamese Weasel in a breakaway from weasel’s older brother’s group of Leone Island Crew in 2008 to form the Goodlyfe Crew.

The duo went on to achieve musical success and earning their right in the entertainment calendar, releasing several hits from the time they arrived with Nakudata, Mugati wa Butter, among their earliest releases.

Last week, Case Clinic general manager Isa Balamu told the media that the Neera singer was out of danger and would soon be on his feet to rejoin the Goodlyf Crew of Radio and Weasel.

However, death appears to have nursed other ideas as, by Monday, it was reported that the singer’s condition had deteriorated.

Radio’s health took a turn for the worst two days ago after he was diagnosed with malaria while in a coma. With an already weaker immune system, it became a big struggle pitting the singer, his doctors and prayerful friends, family and fans on one side, and the angel of death at the other.

Several other entertainment stars such as Jose Chameleone and promoter Balaam Barugahara had gone to Radio’s support in kind and cash.

But in the end, not even financial donations from socialite Bryan White and President Museveni, who contributed Shs25 million and Shs30 million respectively, could save Radio.

For Weasel and the Mayanja family where Radio was almost a member, his untimely departure will be particularly painful and will rub into the raw memory they still have of Emmanuel Mayanja aka AK47, who died in almost similar circumstances on March 26, 2015.

For AK47, it was Dejavu bar in Kabalaga, a Kampala suburb, owned by Jeff Kiwa–incidentally the manager of the Goodlyf Crew– while for Radio is is De Bar in Entebbe. AK47 was reportedly involved in a bar fight and collapsed shortly later in the bathroom of the bar when he had gone to clean up.

Radio was knocked cold at De Bar in Entebbe and later rushed to hospital where he reportedly had a surgery to remove blood clots from his brain. The remained in intensive care until his death Thursday morning.

Police arrests

Following Radio’s admission to hospital, Police arrested George Egesa, the proprietor of the bar from where Radio was assaulted.

Last week, Daily Monitor newspaper reported that three more people had been arrested to help Police with investigations into the beating of Mowzey Radio, bringing the number of those in custody to five.

However, a one Troy Wamala, the key suspect in the case is said to be on the run, the newspaper said.
