Steve Biko hospital ranked top hospital in Gauteng

The Gauteng health department has praised a Pretoria hospital for improving services.

“The Biko academic hospital has been declared the leading central hospital in national core standard and all our hospitals are steadily improving and striving towards this goal,” said the department on Monday.

It said hospitals and clinics in Gauteng had achieved the highest percentage in the latest Ideal Clinic Status Realisation and Maintenance report by the national department of health.

The audit looked at infrastructure, staff, medicine and supplies, administrative processes and bulk supplies.

“An ideal clinic collaborates with other government departments, the private sector and non-governmental organisations to address the social determinants of health,” it said.

“Gauteng has achieved the highest percentage of ideal clinics across the country from 2015 to 2018,” it said.

It said with the total of 281 (75 percent) ideal clinics achieved, the province had exceeded the target of 240 out of 372 facilities.

Ekurhuleni had the highest number of facilities with ideal status at 88.2 percent, followed by Pretoria with 86.3 percent, Sedibeng at 74.4 percent, Johannesburg 72.6 percent and West Rand 45 percent.

The department said for a facility to be recognised as ideal, it should have good infrastructure, adequate staff and medical supplies as well as good administrative processes and sufficient bulk supplies.

“The ideal clinic can be differentiated from an ordinary clinic through its introduction of unique features such as booking system for patients with chronic diseases. This benefits patients through convenient time slots allocation that reduces congestion and long waiting times,” it said.

The department said the clinic should also have chronic clubs and central chronic medicine dispensing and distribution as pickup points for medicines.

“Moreover, the ideal clinic should have prepared and managed readily to use emergency and resuscitation rooms with functional equipment and drugs.”
